Thank you very much for honoring me with the Bronze Prize. Receiving it serves to remind me how great it is that we have the Tokyo TDC at all. How lucky we are that such an association was founded in the first place. There is no doubt the Tokyo TDC is going to be keeping a close eye on the field of lettering for the foreseeable future, so let me take this opportunity to say that I think it would be great if we can put the spotlight on pure design even more in future than we have in the past. By pure design, I mean something comparable to pure literature, something time consuming and painstaking; the kind of work that requires intelligence and innovation. This work of mine which won the award owes a great deal to my collaboration with photographer Geof Kern, who creates typographic photos. It is my hope that he and I can continue this productive relationship which is so beneficial to both of us.
